How to Set Up a Meeting with Your Manager to Discuss Your Career Growth
When planning a time to meet your manager to discuss your career growth, first make sure that you or your boss are not going to be in a hurry to join another meeting.
Depending on the culture of the company that you are with, you can either send a meeting request email or walk in to you manager’s office and talk to him/her about organising a time to chat.
How to express yourself:
Here is a way that you might explain to your manager why you would like to organise a meeting:
“I want to meet with you to discuss my career goals for this year and to explore further growth opportunities within the company.
During this meeting I would like to take time to assess each other’s expectations about my current role and also I would like to have the opportunity to discuss possibilities for me to take on more responsibilities / have more client contact / etc..(as appropriate).”
Make sure that you communicate your goals and ambitions in a way that enables management to see “what’s it in for them” as well– it is important to remember that keeping on top of your career growth is mainly your responsibility.
